COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduction to Gender and Society is a course through which students will explore the social construction of gender. The gender issues and experiences in a local and global context will expose students to gender stereotypes and myths which impact women’s and men’s lives. This course is designed to discuss and investigate the relationship between gender roles and society; i.e., how gender roles are socially constructed, maintained, and enacted. The course also explores gender differences, similarities, and gender issues in the society.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course aims to provide students with

i. A basic understanding of gender relations;

ii. A gender perspective to multi-disciplinary issues;

iii. Facilitate students to read and think critically concerning selected important gender issues in society.

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES

  1. To differentiate gender and sex and manage to do critical analysis on issues related to gender and society.
  2. To understand gender roles and their influences on thoughts and behaviors of the society.
  3. To value roles and contributions of men and women in the society.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS

This course is designed to meet online – mostly. Face-to-face contact is very minimal. Therefore it is essential that you access the course site often (which includes the e-learning portal and website) to: access course announcements; interact with your course mates; submit assignments; take quizzes, etc. It is also expected that each student will do his or her own work! You are expected to be resourceful in teaching yourself how to use e-learning. By enrolling in this course, you have agreed to contribute to weekly discussions by accessing the unit discussion forum regularly. This will require a collaborative team effort, with respect and help for each other, as we build a community of learners. We also expect that you will have a foundational understanding of Internet terms and functions.

Ms. Lai received her Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies (Major) and Gender Studies (Minor) from University of Malaya in 2004 and Master of Science in Gender and Development Studies from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in 2008. After working as a project officer at Women’s Development Collective (WDC) and a research officer of Gender Studies Progamme at University of Malaya, her current position is a lecturer at Women’s Development Research Center, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Her areas of interest are gender, livelihood and gender relations. She can be contacted at wanteng@usm.my

DR. FARHA NAOMI OMAR FAROUK

Dr. Farha Naomi is currently a senior lecturer in the Discipline of Physiology at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). She graduated with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Malaya, majoring in Biomedical Technology. Holding a Ph. D. from the University of Warwick, England, her research interest is in the area of Reproductive Medicine and Embryology. Dr. Farha Naomi is also affiliated to the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies.

DR. NIK NORMA NIK HASAN


Holding a PhD in Environmental Journalism from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, Nik Norma Nik Hasan is currently affiliated to USM School of Communication as a lecturer. Her areas of interest are: Science and Environmental Journalism and Environmental Risk Communication. Her interests have taken her toward researching environmental issues in media, as well as ethical aspects of environmental newswriting.

DR. FADZILA AZNI AHMAD

Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad is a senior lecturer of Islamic Development Management Section, School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. She is also the Management Committee Member of the Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies, School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Her research interest is in the area of Islamic Management, Islamic Development Management and Islamic Institutions Management.

ZAIREENI AZMI

Zaireeni Azmi received her degree in Sociology and Psychology at the University of Tasmania, Australia and Master of Arts in Gender Studies at University Malaya. She was a lecturer at Gender Studies Programme, Universiy Malaya before she transferred to USM. She is currently working at Women’s Development Research Centre (KANITA). Her field of interest is in the area of gender, culture and politics especially women in politics.
